ABOUT
Peter Homan's art is created from a world of contradictions and experimentation. Peter was born in Dublin and he received a Degree in Fine Art from DLAIDT Dublin, in 2004, but despite this he considers himself to be largely self-taught. Peter has exhibited his work in a range of notable galleries throughout Ireland and has completed a number of commercial projects in public buildings throughout Dublin.
Peter Homan's art is created from a world of contradictions and experimentation. He was born in Dublin and has spent his life living in urban environments, but his art has consistently been influenced by the natural world beyond the city limits. He received a Degree in Fine Art in DLAIDT Dublin, in 2004, but despite this he considers himself to be a largely self-taught. Peter paints in a new innovative way. He paints with fire and oils.
Peters’ relationship with fire-painting began in 2004 while in an artist residency in Cill Rialiagh, Co. Kerry, Ireland. He accidentally set fire to a painting one evening when placing it next to a candle. After blowing it out with sheer panic, Peter realised he loved the effect it had created on the canvas and decided to explore the possibility of using fire within his work, incorporating and perfecting his technique, as much as he could during his time in Kerry.
In 2014 Peter dedicated all of his time to fire-painting technique and began to embark on a solo show, ‘I AM HOMAN’ in 2016 in the Copperhouse Gallery, Dublin, Ireland, where he sold out over the period of the show.
Since then, Peter has incorporated fire-painting into all of his work, abstract, floral, and landscape. However, it is fire and fire can’t be tamed, so instead of having complete control, Peter works alongside it to control the outcome.
Throughout his career, Peter has explored many different topics in his art using a wide variety of painting techniques. He also draws inspiration from a huge range of other artists.
Peter was then inspired by Renaissance and Baroque religious iconography to create a series of paintings 'Saints and Sinners'. When Peter began painting this exhibiton the civil union bill was being passed through parliament causing much debate throughout the country. For this exhibition, Peter took gay Irish celebrities and placed them in scenes reminiscent of paintings by Caravaggio. In placing these men and women, such as Sen. David Norris, Graham Norton, and the late Stephen Gately, empowered Peter’s work to challenge us with the question of the saints’ sexuality within the church and what that would mean.
